Google's Gmail Ad Data Shift and What It Means for D2C
For five years, Google's privacy policy held one sentence steady: content in Gmail, Drive and Photos does not personalize ads. The Verge spotted the change this week. As of October 16, users who connect those apps to Search or Gemini allow summaries and inferences from that content to shape the ads they see, and disconnecting does not delete what was already collected.
Most of what sits in a shopper's inbox was written by brands. Order confirmations, shipping updates, win-back offers, the code from a festive sale. For connected users, that content can now inform ad delivery on Search and AI Mode. On the advertiser side there is no new control and no reporting that says this signal changed your results. The data flows in one direction.
Our reaction, building IgniteAI: this settles where the work goes. Delivery systems will keep absorbing signals a brand can never inspect, and the one input a brand still fully authors is the ad itself. So we spend our energy there, on generating the versions, hooks and offers a brand actually chooses, because everything after upload is increasingly somebody else's model.
D2C founders: your post-purchase emails may be the most detailed record of a customer anywhere. What changes for you now that they can feed an ad system?
