Google Search Lift Metrics Give D2C Video Ads a Second Score

The best response to a video ad has never shown up in the dashboard. Someone watches the whole thing, taps nothing, and an hour later types the brand name into Google. Every D2C founder has seen this traffic: it lands as "direct" or "organic" right after a new creative starts running, and proving the ad caused it has been guesswork.

Google is starting to put numbers on it. Ads API v26, released October 14, ships 15 Search Lift metrics, including relative search lift and normalized incremental searches. All of them answer one question: how many searches did this campaign cause that would not have happened anyway? The API does not let you create the lift studies yet, but it turns their results into columns you can query, compare and put in a weekly report.

We care because this is the half of creative work performance dashboards have ignored. A video ad captures demand that already exists, and it plants demand that surfaces later as a search. The second part is where hooks and brand cues earn their keep, and until now you needed a commissioned brand-lift study to see it at all. Once lift sits in the API, it stops being a twice-a-year study and becomes something you check per creative, the way you check ROAS today.

Our bet at IgniteAI has always been that creative quality compounds past the click. We would rather be graded on both jobs than one.

D2C founders and marketers: when a creative works, do you look at what happened to your brand searches, or only at ROAS?
