Meta Per-Creative Audiences Turn D2C Variants Into the Plan

A women's knitwear ad and a men's version used to mean two ad sets and two budgets. Since yesterday, Meta can run both in one ad set and show each creative to its own audience.

The new option, "Choose an audience for each ad creative," went live for Marketing API partners on October 19. The mechanics say a lot about where Meta is headed. The ad set itself has to stay broad (up to age 65, all genders included), and the narrowing happens on the image or the video: each creative carries its own persona and carves a segment out of that broad container. After a decade of targeting living at the ad set layer, it now sits on the asset.

For D2C brands this changes the creative math. When one ad set serves one audience, three variants is a testing decision. When every variant can carry its own audience, the variant matrix becomes the media plan: the 24-year-old gifting buyer and the 45-year-old repeat customer get different hooks inside the same campaign, and someone has to produce all of that video. That production curve is what we are building IgniteAI for, generation that holds up when the number of creatives stops being three and becomes personas times hooks.

Worth knowing before you plan around it: this is API-only for now, it cannot be combined with Advantage+ audiences, and Meta has not said whether a persona strictly limits who sees a creative or only steers delivery. Treat it as a direction rather than a settled feature.

If you run D2C spend on Meta: do you brief creative per audience today, or make one hero asset and let delivery sort it out?
